Google to decommission Reader and 7 other services

As part of second round of spring cleaning, Google will decommission widely used RSS feed aggregator Google Reader and 7 other services. Urs Hölzle, SVP Technical Infrastructure quotes in Google blog that "While the product has a loyal following, over the years usage has declined. So, on July 1, 2013, we will retire Google Reader". This brings the total to 70 features or services closed since spring cleaning began in 2011.

Apart from Google Reader, other services to be decommissioned are as follows:
          Apps Script
CalDAV API
Google Building Maker
Google Cloud Connect
Google Voice App for Blackberry
Search API for Shopping
Snapseed Desktop for Macintosh and Windows

Various online petitions have since cropped up to save Google Reader which actually was born with Blogger. It's time to see now whether Google heeds the humungous number of petitions to save the Reader!
